about

László Nagy (17 July 1925 in Felsőiszkáz – 30 January 1978 in Budapest) was a Hungarian poet and translator. He started as a populist poet and in his early youth was a believer in socialist ideology. His oeuvre comprises more than 400 poems and many volumes of translations. He was also a prose writer and graphic artist.

On October 23, 1956, the revolution broke out with elemental force against the oppressive personal cult of nearly a decade and the dictatorship that served Soviet interests. The sensitive László Nagy deeply felt this period and the subsequent horrors, and expressed it beautifully in his confession entitled Életem: "My stomach hurts. My nerves were shaken, my sinister thoughts swirled. In the beginning, I naively believed that the fault was inside me, but it turned out that it was outside, in reality. In the beginning, however, I didn't blame the top management, I couldn't believe that the revolution that kept me alive in my youth had been betrayed. I went to my birthplace, they waited with complaints, I saw a mind-blowingly tragicomic situation, humiliated people and forces alien to the people. The national tragedy of 1956 began then. The year 52 already shows my struggle and not only with myself. I took my poems Január, Bolyongó, Téli kronika, Drusch to the editors in vain, they were so open, open-breaks. But the situation also taught me to write."

NAGY LÁSZLÓ: VARJÚ-KOSZORÚ

Sortüzek döreje szédít,
szív szakad és vakolat,
gyász-szalagok közt az Édes
már megint sírvafakadt.
Fél a fű, a vézna füst is
ijedten legöndörül,
félelem dobog a házban,
a tájban körös-körül.
Fekete bársony-koloncok
örvényét veti az ég,
varjú-koszorú fölöttem,
rajtam hideg veriték.
